Negotiations are currently under way that could result in Mossi & Ghisolfi purchasing PTA (purified terephthalic acid – the main raw material used in the production of PET) from the Brazilian company Petrobras. The Italian multinational is currently the only producer of PET in Brazil and imports, mainly from Mexico, the PTA required to meet its needs. Its initial development strategy, which involved the production of both PTA and PET, has now been completely abandoned being deemed uneconomical, given that in 2013 Petrobras is due to set up, a new company called Petrolchimica Suape. This company, which will have a production capacity up to 450 ktons of PET per year, will become a direct competitor of Mossi & Ghisolfi.
