According to the most recent statistical report by the China Plastic Product Industry Association, providing data for 2011, the Chinese plastics processing industry is composed of some 13,000 companies with revenues of at least 20 million yuan each (almost 2.5 million euros) or 1,560 billion yuan collectively (almost 190 billion euros, up 27.5% over the previous year), employing just under 2.5 million workers, and producing close to 55 million tons of products.
Regarding the various segments, the report shows that 17.2% of revenues derive from pipes and profiles, 13.4% from film, 12.2% from filaments, 11.4% from consumer goods, 8.7% from containers and miscellaneous rigid packaging, 7.7% from technical components, 6.0% from synthetic leather, and 4.4% from foams. This last segment has shown the most vigorous growth trend (+25% in volume), followed by films for agricultural use (+14%). Consumption of the main polymer types approached 52 million tons (18 tons of PE, nearly 14 tons of PVC, and over 13 tons of PP), roughly 70% of it being produced locally.
