Using resin transfer moulding (RTM) technology and carbon-fibre-reinforced plastics, researchers at the Swiss University of Rapperswil have developed a trumpet that is lighter than the traditional brass models and requires less air to play it.
The new trumpet, produced by the Swiss company DaCarbo, is also appreciated by the Tonhalle orchestra in Zurich for its very warm tones, conferred by the particular vibratory qualities of the carbon fibres that cannot be achieved with brass.
