According to a survey by All India Plastics Industry Association, the Indian plastic processing industry could see annual growth of 12-15% until 2015 at least. A similar trend is expected in the demand for polymers which, over the next three years, could reach 25 million tons, thereby tripling per-capita consumption, which is currently approximately 8 kg.
Being home to 15 major manufacturers of polymers with a capacity of approximately 8.5 million tons, India would therefore account for 9% of the world consumption of plastic raw materials. On the other hand, there are about 25000 processor companies who currently generated revenues of 850 billion rupees, equivalent to 11.7 billion euro. By 2015, these companies are expected to make investments worth 450 billion rupees (6.2 billion euro), with the installation of more than 40000 machines and accessories, of which nearly 27,000 will be injection machines, 4000 blow moulding machines and more than 10000 extrusion lines.
Italian exports to India of plastic and rubber machines reached its historic peak in 2011 with over 67 million euro. Almost 23 million euro was generated in the first half of 2012, about 7.7 million of which deriving from the sale of extruders, in light of a general fall in sales of other types of machines.
