From metal to plastic
A few days ago in Stuttgart, it was announced that a manufacturer of plastic packaging for tuna has commissioned an injection molding cell for Waldorf Technik (manufacturer of robots and automation systems).
The companies involved in the project (Waldorf Technik, Kortec and Intravis) claim to have developed a system for moulding high volume containers in 3-layer polypropylene and EVOH barrier effect.
The metal replacement with plastic in the production of cans for tuna is a novelty for the food industry. In this case the EVOH barrier layer can preserve the characteristics of the product and gain shelf life of up to two years. This development could lead to significant savings in terms of production and logistic costs, allowing even more design options.
