Meccanoplastica's first steps on the path to sustainability
A specialist manufacturer of extrusion, injection and stretch blow molding plants based in Florence, Meccanoplastica embarked on its sustainability path in 2023 and, at the moment, already boasts the "bronze" certification of Ecovadis, a leading international provider of business sustainability ratings. After the first year dedicated to gaining insight and self-assessment, over 2024 the company management was able to draw up a full-fledged sustainability plan to guide the company in the coming years in a rational and transparent way. The upcoming year 2025 will be a crucial year for reaping the results of the initiatives already put in place and planning new decisive ones.
One of the first actions taken by Meccanoplastica at the beginning of its sustainability path was a materiality assessment, i.e. a study based on questionnaires submitted to employees, customers, suppliers, partner credit institutions and other stakeholders in order to identify and prioritize ESG issues. In this way, the company was able to get insight into the main opportunities and areas for action, so as to be able to direct its corporate sustainability path. In addition, Meccanoplastica carried out, first on 2022 data and then on 2023 data, the measurement of its carbon footprint, with a systematic and transparent approach in line with the GHG Protocol international standard.
These initiatives require great commitment from the entire corporate organisation, as they are taking place in total transparency according to the rigorous and rational criteria established under the GRI standards (Global Reporting Initiative). 2025 will see Meccanoplastica engaged on three main fronts:
- supply chain monitoring; already in 2024 the company proceeded with the inventory of greenhouse gases in the supply chain referring to the 2023 financial year including initial estimates on Scope 3 (an acronym that defines the environmental impact of suppliers);
- the implementation of an environmental management system according to ISO 14001;
- the ongoing improvement of working conditions through the activation of a welfare plan, the publication of a code of ethics also covering themes such as inclusion, diversity and equal opportunities, and the activation of training courses on ESG issues.
Meccanoplastica's first Sustainability Report according to GRI standards will be published in late 2025, a prestigious milestone based on corporate social responsibility, accountability and transparency. The company is also drawing up an accurate energy consumption measurement and monitoring plan for all the systems it manufactures in view of the Euromap 10+ energy rating in 2025.
