Cavity recognition

The new Cavity Recognition system has been developed by Sacmi for quality control and defect management in bulk production, in this case beverage caps. Even a single cap with a small defect can mean cost increases throughout the supply chain. To avoid any inconvenience, the system inspects the inside of the caps, each one identified by its mould number, i.e., the cavity where it was moulded. This provides information regarding the number of caps produced by the machine, a useful figure. Additionally, not only are defects detected, but also their origin, enabling processors to intervene promptly to rectify the cavity or cavities causing the problem.
Accurate identification and fast intervention are the key features in improving system reliability. In addition, the mould-number character is irrelevant, unlike other devices that recognize only certain dimensions and character types located in specific areas of the cap. The system runs in self-learning mode regarding type, whilst the position of the number, the presence of other codes nearby, and the cap colour make no difference at all.
