Plastic straws return in the US

It seems to be a decision driven by convenience rather than an environmental choice: in recent days, Donald Trump signed an executive order that represents a step backwards for single-use or disposable items, particularly plastic straws, which are being reinstated compared to those made of paper. The reason seems simple: the latter do not work.
In a broader context, the provision overturns the Biden administration’s position and is part of a strategy to promote the return to plastic materials. In the days leading up to the signing of the order, the U.S. president had already expressed his intention to abolish the use of paper straws in federal agencies and to eliminate sustainable products from public practices, emphasizing a transition towards more practical and durable alternatives. Trump’s team has been tasked with developing a national strategy to implement plastic straws. Federal agencies will be required to revise their purchasing policies, focusing on materials that, according to the president, offer greater durability and practicality. This can be interpreted as a willingness to replace biodegradable straws with plastic ones under the motto “Back to Plastic”.
The Plastics Industry Association welcomed the executive order. “We know that plastic is the best material for almost everything it is used for, as well as being sustainable. Straws are only the beginning: ‘Back to Plastic’ is a movement everyone should support. We appreciate Trump’s position in recognising the value of plastic, and we look forward to working with his administration to advance our industry”, said Matt Seaholm, CEO and president of the Plastics Industry Association.
