Calender with cycloidal gear reducers: energy consumption cut by 60%

A new calender with a 3,500 mm working width for the processing of rollable thermoplastic has recently been supplied by Union to a processor operating in the geomembrane sector. For motorisation, the calender is equipped with special cycloidal gear reducers that enable a reduction in energy consumption by over 60%.

The high values of transmittable torque, minimal backlash, and high rigidity allow the cycloidal reducers to handle heavy loads without generating rotational oscillations. Additionally, their design ensures an even distribution of force, enabling them to withstand stresses up to five times the nominal torque. For cylinder position control, hydraulic cylinders with magnetostrictive position transducers and servo valves have been employed, ensuring precision and speed in positioning. The closing force is 140 kg per cm.

The calender is characterised by its high versatility, dimensional precision, and quality control at every stage of the geomembrane production process. Union develops solutions for the production of geomembranes with widths ranging from 1,250 to 8,000 mm and production capacities of up to 4 tons per hour.
