Food and beverage drive plastics growth

According to the reports and estimates provided by the market research company Smithers Pira, the market share of plastics in the Mexican packaging segment, which in 2012 reached 27.7%, compared to the 25.1% recorded in 2010, will show a growth rate exceeding 3% at least until 2017. This development will be driven, in particular, by the increasing use of plastic packaging in the food sector, with the flexible packaging standing out as the best performer, reaching up to 8.7% and exceeding 3.1 billion dollars by 2018. Today, Mexico is also the world’s second biggest consumer of PET bottles: it is no coincidence that some beverage multinational companies are planning to establish or expand their subsidiaries in that country.
