Market development and perspectives - The market for wood plastic composites (WPC) is developing rapidly in Europe, enabled by a number of developments in production technology as well as improved marketing programmes and yet the European market is still only a fraction of the size of its potential. The Wood Plastics Composites 2008 conference organised by AMI (Applied Market Information) in Vienna (Austria) was focused on the latest developments of the industry in Europe. In addition substantial contributions were given by North American and Asian speakers. An array of papers addressed the key issues facing participants in the wood plastic composites industry today: technology developments, best marketing practice and shifts in feedstock procurement. Jon Nash (AMI) cited new growth in the European markets for WPC, including an increase in sales from Deceuninck, a new plant being built by UPM Kymmene and an announcement from Rehau of intent to take leadership in the decking market. Marketing is needed to increase in consumer awareness of the advantages of these products over soft woods.
