United States: progress in rigid plastic recycling
According to recent study commissioned by the American Chemistry Council, the USA is showing a good trend in the recycling of rigid plastic materials (bottles excluded), recording a 10% increase between 2011 and 2012 to reach a total of around 455 thousand tons, three times the amount recycled in 2007. This class of materials covers a large range of items, from toys to caps, car parts and items for gardening.
The leaders of the local association of postconsumer plastic material recyclers are also satisfied with the positive progression of this sector which seems to open the way for promising future scenarios, thanks in part to the ease with which Americans recycle rigid plastics, i.e. collecting and processing, together, different articles belonging to this category of materials. The 2012 National Report on Postconsumer Non-Bottle Rigid Plastic Recycling says that 38% of the postconsumer plastic collected is polypropylene, while HDPE accounts for 34%.
