European attention to bags

The European Commission is considering the possibility of regulating the use of non-biodegradable plastic bags, partially to override measures that individual countries – including Ireland, Austria, and Italy – have implemented in recent years.
European Commission spokespersons have recently expressed the opinion that it will not be easy to find a "common factor" on the issue, since on the one hand it does not appear possible to absolutely forbid the use of non-biodegradable bags, while on the other the definition of biodegradability of many plastics non generated by the petrochemical industry is neither simple nor universally agreed.
