SABIC’s TRUCIRCLE solutions for packaging at K 2022

SABIC’s TRUCIRCLE portfolio and services showcase our circular innovations. We collaborate with the value chain, drive circularity in the packaging industry and help to close the loop on plastic waste.

Since the launch of TRUCIRCLE, in October 2019, there have been many firsts. Our 3 latest innovations are:

- UPM Raflatac to launch the world’s first label material made from SABIC’s certified circular ocean bound plastic: Ocean bound plastic is abandoned plastic waste found in areas up to 50 km inland from waterways that may eventually be washed into the ocean by rainfall, rivers or tides. The OBP used in the project is recovered by local partners of HHI. HHI converts OBP into a pyrolysis oil by using advanced recycling, and SABIC uses this oil as an alternative feedstock to produce certified circular SABIC PP polymer for further processing to film by Taghleef. Then, UPM Raflatac produces the label material;

- SABIC, Tesco, Heinz & Berry join forces in closed-loop project for Heinz Beanz Snap Pots based on certified circular PP: SABIC has teamed up with Heinz, Tesco and Berry in an innovative recycling trial in the UK designed to close the loop on soft plastic food packaging. Consumers are encouraged to return soft plastic packaging to collection points set up at Tesco stores. A portion of this collected plastic packaging is converted into recycled oils. SABIC uses the oil to produce certified circular polypropylene of the same quality as virgin resin. Berry Global, a leading supplier of innovative packaging solutions, then manufactures the new Beanz Snap Pots and sends them to Heinz for filling with Beanz and delivery to Tesco. The new Heinz Beanz microwavable pots are made with 39% of certified circular SABIC PP homopolymer;

- SABIC, VOLPAK & VIV collaborate on full mono-PE solution for stand up pouches: There is a growing need for sustainable packaging solutions when it comes to pouches that are made of multi-material laminate structures. Mono-PE packaging is a sustainable solution as it is easy to recycle. BOPE (biaxially oriented polyethylene) film can be the core of a solution where all of the layers are created from PE polymer grades. Available as certified circular and certified renewable polymer from TRUCIRCLE portfolio, SABIC BOPE material offers very good optics and printability, great mechanical property and toughness, optimal sealing integrity, good high-speed packaging and potential to get unique controlled linear tear direction feature for ease of opening of the packaging.
